NICK CAVE: SOUNDSUITS
Chicago Cultural Center
Chicago, Illinois
In the spring of 2006, Chicagoans and visitors were able to view approximately 30 of his unique soundsuits when they come to the Chicago Cultural Center as part of a new exhibition. Also, on view will be a video presentation of Cave’s previous performances utilizing these visually engaging sthe Soundsuits, along with an installation of related fabricated artifacts.
“These elaborate costumes are not only breathtakingly beautiful, they are provocative as well,” said Lanny Silverman, Curator of Exhibitions for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. “We are pleased to be able to present this extraordinary exhibition and introduce Nick’s newest work to a broader audience.”
The project was honored with a 2006 Joyce Award, announced January 23 by the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation. The award will made possible the commissioning of 20 to 30 new soundsuits for the exhibition. The Joyce Awards, awarded annually, support Midwest cultural institutions in commissioning work by artists of color.
